Franz Adam Beyerlein (born March 22, 1871 in Meißen ; † February 27, 1949 in Leipzig ) was a German lawyer and writer. After a few well-known prose works with an anti-militarist tendency published before 1914, he was nevertheless successful with a number of novels and short stories, including a " field post edition ", even during the period of "National Socialism ". Franz-Adam-Beyerlein-Platz is named after him in Beyerlein's hometown of Meissen .

Life and effect

Beyerlein studied at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br. And Leipzig Law and Political Sciences and History. He then settled permanently in Leipzig, where he founded the Literary Society in 1895 with like-minded people . His estate can also be found in the Leipzig State Archives.

Beyerlein's novel Jena or Sedan? from 1903 and his drama Zapfenstreich , created at the same time, are among the most popular German-language works before the First World War . The drama was also made into a film. According to a contemporary reference work, Beyerlein caused a sensation primarily with “a glaring description of the life of an officer”. In the novel, Beyerlein paints a critical picture of the Wilhelmine army after the turn of the century from the contrasting point of view of a common soldier and a professional officer. The grievances are denounced with a bluntness trained in naturalism, whereby Beyerlein's criticism is directed primarily against the Prussian Junkers. Also that of Günther Albrecht u. a. The published lexicon of German-language writers from the GDR confirms the "extremely great success" of both works. The anti-militarist tendency is mixed with effective, entertaining traits.

Beyerlein's later works (which would have received less echo), of course, showed a "carefree, 'upward' adjustment". The encyclopedia mentions the stories from the First World War as examples, O Germany, holy fatherland! (1915), the three-volume work on Frederick the Great (1922-1924) and the "German Chronicle" country wants to live in 1933. In this is Beyerleins adds about 1914 authored "German soldiers' song" muzzle the Frenchman open wide , the According to two websites, it can be found at least in song collections from 1914 and 1926. The last website listed presents the lyrics.

In Leipzig, Beyerlein was a member of the Leoniden association .

A Beyerlein estate is located in the Saxon State Archives, Leipzig State Archives, as inventory 21783 Franz Adam Beyerlein estate. It contains, among other things, Beyerlein's manuscripts and diaries.
