Arthur Wynne
Arthur Wynne (born June 22, 1871 in Liverpool , † January 14, 1945 in Clearwater ) was an editor of the New York World . He headed the tricks and jokes department , where, among other things , he had to fill the Sunday supplement Fun with new puzzles. He became famous for the invention of the crossword puzzle , which was published in the Christmas edition on December 21, 1913. The basis of the puzzle was the game magic square , which he knew from his childhood. His crossword puzzle, which he called Word-Cross Puzzle , instead of Cross-Word Puzzle (crossword puzzle), was diamond-shaped , so it differs from the rectangular crossword puzzles that are usually used today .
