Alexander Nikolajewitsch Afanassjew

Alexander Afanasyev ( Russian Александр Николаевич Афанасьев * July 11 jul. / 23. July  1826 greg. In boguchar in Voronezh Governorate , † September 23 jul. / 5. October  1871 greg. In Moscow ) Editor and researcher was of Russian fairy tales .

Life

Afanassjew attended grammar school in Voronezh between 1837 and 1844 . He then studied for four years law degree at the University of Moscow , busy at this time but the first time with historical cultural research . From 1849 he was archivist at the Moscow Foreign Ministry . In 1856 he took over the management of the commission for the publication of state documents and contracts .

At the request of the ethnographic department of the Russian Geographical Society in Saint Petersburg , between 1855 and 1863 he published eight fascicles with around 600 fairy tales under the title Russian Folk Tales ( Russian: Народные Русские Сказки ), which made him known as the Russian counterpart of the Brothers Grimm .
