The beautiful Varvara (original title: Russian Варвара-краса, длинная коса , Varwara-krassa, dlinnaja kossa ) is a Soviet fairy tale film from 1970 . Essentially, the fairy tale The Sea Tsar and the all-wise Vasilisa from the collection of Alexander Nikolayevich Afanassjew is filmed here . This fairy tale by Afanassev plays around the motif of the magical escape and is related to the grim fairy tales The Dearest Roland and De Zwei Künigeskinner . The water or fountain spirit Tschudo-Judo is known to Afanassjew from other fairy tales such as B. Ivan Bykovich . In the Varvara film, Alexander Rou's fabulous fairy tale narration also incorporates other fairy tale motifs into the fairy tale events of the magical escape.

action

Tsar Jeremei travels through his tsarist empire for a whole year to count everything there and to create a register. After his work is done, he returns home and takes a break on the way back. Driven by thirst, he looks for a well from which he wants to drink. Then the deep water tsar "Tschudo-Judo - the outlaw, the sinister prince at the bottom of the lakes, the mighty ruler in the depths of the moor, etc." grabs his beard and demands a ransom. In order to be released, Jeremei promises to give Chudo-Judo what he does not know in his kingdom. Back at home, the tsar is greeted effusively and learns that the tsarina has given him an heir to the throne. Having got into this precarious situation, he seeks the advice of his scribe Afonja, who has a clever idea - he should exchange his son for another brat and later, after fulfilling the promise, bring the real son back again. The child is so mixed up with a fisherman, but where there is a double interchange, so that at the end - but again - without the knowledge of the Tsar Alexis is the Tsar cradle.

Eighteen years later, in the underground magic realm of Chudo-Judo, his beautiful daughter Varvara is to be married. However, she does not want to marry a magician, but an ordinary earth man and rejects all uninvited suitors. So the “Dark Prince on the Bottom of the Lakes” demands the promise of the tsar, which his son promises him, who, however, has developed into a stupid, hungry lazy man. To lure him into the realm of the deep water tsar, Afonja hatches another tricky ruse - the kid is supposed to be served a picnic of thirsty food near a well. When the heir to the throne wants to drink at the well, the scribe throws him into the depths. Down there, in a cave, he meets a “funny old woman” who shows him the way to chudo judo and “a strange animal, with ears like a rabbit, eyes she doesn't know how and a tail like a lion” (donkey with cardboard ears) and gives him a carrot and fragrant honey for his journey through the magical land. In the forest he meets the "strange animal". He swings upside down on his back and eats the carrot on his back. When he arrives at a river, he meets two bears, lets them float him over it and in the meantime empties the honey jar himself. When he arrives at the other bank of the river, he is expected by the nobility of the deep-water tsar.

The good and noble fisherman's son, who is mistakenly believed to be the true prince, has meanwhile been made the new heir of the empire and is to learn to rule. He is informed about the alleged swap fraud, whereupon he hurries after the original heir to the throne, believing that a poor fisherman's boy would have been sent down in his place. The “funny old woman” also gives him a carrot and a pot of honey, which he distributes perfectly to the animals. In the meantime, the Tsar's son, who has arrived at Tschudo-Judo, is supposed to marry the beautiful Varvara. She doesn't think about agreeing, so she gives him a riddle that he has to solve first. She turns into a dove and creates five illusions of them - in three attempts he has to find the right one. He fails and is supposed to be executed, but at the last moment the fisherman's son arrives and informs the deep-water tsar about the supposed hoax. Instead of the tsar's son, he now has to solve Warwara's riddle himself, which he manages to do straight away, whereupon he and Varwara fall in love.

Later the tsar's son persuades the chudo judo that the fisherman's son wants to take his daughter with him to earth instead of reigning in the underworld. Encouraged, Tschudo-Judo rages to the young man's quarters, but he is gone, since Varvara was able to overhear the conversation and fled with her lover in time. Beside himself with anger, the “mighty ruler in the depths of the moor” orders the pursuit of the two, but disguised as “purple rabbits” they can escape his henchmen for the time being. You cross the river and reach the forest, but are overtaken there. The "strange animal" comes to their aid and attacks the pursuers. Having gained a little head start, the lovers arrive in the cave with the “funny old woman”. This stops the storming men of the deep water tsar with the help of a magical barrier and separates the tsar's son running at the top from them. The fisherman's son, Varvara and the tsar's son then go up into the human world, where the truth is revealed to the world. The tsar's son returns home to the palace, which gives the tsar Jeremei gray hair, because he learns that this same villain inherits his throne and the entire tsarist empire. Varvara and Andrei begin a life together.

Reviews

“The daughter of the ruler of an underground empire longs to be human. Her love for a fisherman's son, whom the tsar takes to be his biological child, brings to light a trade-off with which the tsar wanted to cheat her father out of his wages. An imaginative fairy tale film with playful and staging humor, which is also characterized by its love of detail. "
