action

The widow Matrjona lives in a small village. She lives in a small hut and looks after her vegetable garden, in which two scarecrows are supposed to keep the crows away, but they have little success. Matrjona complains about the eaten cabbage and threatens to burn the scarecrows if they are not useful. When the two hear this, they decide to emigrate. Matryona meanwhile complains to mother earth of her suffering, she wants nothing more than a little daughter. Mother earth fulfills her wish and conjures up a little girl at Matrjona's side. She wants the child to grow quickly, even every hour, and so the child, called Vasilissa, will soon be a young woman. One day the black magician, who cannot stand the happiness of the people, appears and gives Matryona a chest with a wedding dress for her daughter. If she waves a sleeve and expresses a wish, it is fulfilled once. Matryona tells Vasilissa never to open the chest.

Vasilissa gets to know and love the beautiful blacksmith Ivan. When he invites her to a dance and Matryona is out, Vasilissa opens the chest and puts on the dress. Arriving at the party, she sees Ivan make another woman's beautiful eyes and, in her jealousy, wishes that he would never look at someone else again. Your wish comes true and Ivan goes blind. The black wizard tells her that only the water of life can restore Ivan's sight. In order to get to the water, Vasilissa has to pass three tests in which she must not forget once, forget herself once and be ready to give her life once. Vasilisa agrees.

Together with Iwan she goes on a search for the water of life. She meets a forest rascal who pretends to know the way to the water of life and sends Iwan into a cave, which he blocks. He wants to make Vasilisa forget with music, but she remembers Ivan and can break the spell. Ivan and Vasilissa find themselves in the forest and meet the two scarecrows here, who got lost on their escape. The scarecrow woman and the scarecrow man join the two. You meet a beautiful woman in a castle who invites you to dinner. She also pretends to know the way to the water of life. Vasilissa should, however, be ready to give her Ivan for the water. She shouldn't make a sound no matter what she does. Vasilissa agrees and the woman now speaks to Ivan in Wassilissa's voice, confesses her love for him and wants to seduce the blind man. The scarecrows, however, reprimand Ivan for flirting with a strange woman and the spell breaks. Vasilissa also passed the second test. You and Iwan come to the water of life, which has to be fetched into daylight from a deep well by means of a wheel. The turning of the wheel is accompanied by the chiming of bells, each of which makes people age by a year at the fountain wheel. Numerous old men are already staying right by the well and have tried in vain to get the water of life. Ivan turns the wheel until the bucket is on the surface, but all the men throw themselves on the water so that the bucket sinks back to the bottom of the well. Ivan grew old over turning the wheel. Vasilissa tries to get the bucket upstairs and turns gray from turning. With the last of her strength she can hold the bucket with the water of life and Ivan washes his face. He becomes young again and can see, but the water runs dry after his washing. Vasilissa dies and Ivan carries her back to the village. Here Matryona asks Mother Earth to give her daughter back the life she has barely lived and Mother Earth also fulfills this wish.
