Hermann Schiff (born as David Bär Schiff on May 1, 1801 in Hamburg ; died on April 1, 1867 there ) was a German writer .

Life

Hermann Schiff was Heinrich Heine's cousin . After studying philosophy in Göttingen, Berlin and Jena (with doctorate in 1825) he dealt with music and literature. He moved to Leipzig, where he edited the literary magazine Der Dichterspiegel . He then moved to Berlin, where he worked on various magazines. In 1835 he returned to Hamburg. Here he worked as a journalist. In order to make a living, he also worked as an actor, fencing master, poet, musician, ballet dancer and music writer. He lived in great need and died, baptized Protestant, in the poor house. Nevertheless, he was buried in the Jewish cemetery, as no document was found about the baptism that had taken place.
