Jakob Friedrich Ferdinand Schreiber (born February 6, 1809 in Ulm ; † October 28, 1867 ) was a German publisher and the founder of the well-known children's book publisher JF Schreiber .

Life

When Jakob was three years old, his parents died and he was sent to the military orphanage in Stuttgart. He was trained as a lithographer in Georg Ebner's lithographic workshop .

Jakob Ferdinand Schreiber came to Esslingen am Neckar in 1831 with a good education and 44 lithographic stone slabs . In the same year he married the wealthy bourgeois daughter Maria Karoline König and founded a lithographic institute.

At the beginning, for example, art sheets were printed with partial views of Esslingen and its surroundings. Soon, however, there were presentation sheets with religious motifs (so-called Holgen ) and prints with scientific content for children, which made the still young publisher a great success.

From 1833 colored illustrations for textbooks were made. The first children's books appeared in 1840.

In 1864 Jakob Ferdinand Schreiber was awarded the Golden Medal for Art and Science by King Wilhelm I (Württemberg) or King Karl (Württemberg) .

The Schreiber couple had two sons, Ferdinand and Max. In 1869 their daughter Rosa Pauline Karoline married the musician Christian Fink .
