Schreiber-Verlag

The Schreiber-Verlag was founded in 1831 by Jakob Ferdinand Schreiber in Esslingen am Neckar . After Schreiber's death in 1868, his son Ferdinand Schreiber continued the publishing house, which his brother Max Schreiber later joined as a partner.

Initially, the publishing program consisted of colored art sheets and landscape pictures. However, the publishing house was particularly successful with color-illustrated children's and nature books, picture and handicraft sheets . These soon gained the reputation of being “particularly educationally valuable”, since they presented natural and technical information in a child-friendly manner, but were also well received by the children themselves thanks to their above-average careful, often loving design.

The most famous historical titles of the publisher include u. a .:

historical and current model building sheets

The publishing house was even able to achieve international success with its paper theaters . The multi-dimensional picture books by Lothar Meggendorfer became a special feature of the publisher's program . With their tricky folding and sliding mechanisms, they allowed entire scenarios to be unfolded from the book or to "transform" a picture by pulling a tab so that a scene often turns into one surprising turn.

The publisher's cardboard model kits , which reproduced complex objects such as buildings (especially castles, palaces or lighthouses), ships and airplanes, Christmas cribs and dress-up dolls in great detail, are also known to hobbyists and collectors .

Theodor Haecker also worked for Schreiber-Verlag at the beginning of the 20th century . Today the J. F. Schreiber Museum in Esslingen presents the history and publications of the publisher. The Schreiber family ran the publishing house until 1988 . Until 2014 , the successor company Esslinger Verlag JF Schreiber GmbH belonged to the Stuttgart Klett Group . Since then it has been part of the Thienemann-Esslinger Verlag . Children's books are still being produced. Some of the most successful historical titles have been reprinted. The model building arch branch was taken over by Aue-Verlag , Möckmühl .
