Pierre-Benjamin Lafaye (born July 6, 1809 in Mont-Saint-Sulpice , Yonne department , † January 5, 1867 in Aix-en-Provence ) was a French philosopher, linguist, Romance scholar and lexicographer.

life and work

Lafaye was a student at the École normal supérieure . He passed the Agrégation de Philosophie in 1832 , completed his habilitation with the Thèses Dissertation sur la philosophie atomistique (Paris 1833) and Thesis philosophica de definitione (Paris 1833) and was professor of philosophy at the Collège royal in Orléans (1834), at the Collège royal in Marseille (1845) ) and at the University of Aix-en-Provence (also Dean of the Faculté des lettres).

Inspired by the dictionary manuscript of the philosopher Étienne Bonnot de Condillac , which came into his hands, Lafaye dedicated his scientific existence to comparative synonymy (understood as philosophy) . His enormous dictionary (with a theoretical foreword) from 1858 to 1865 made him the most important French synonymist and the forerunner of both structural semantics and collocation research .

Pierre-Benjamin Lafaye was the brother of the painter Prosper Lafaye (1806-1883).
