John Rutter Chorley

John Rutter Chorley (* 1807 in Blackley Hurst, Lancashire , † June 29, 1867 in London ) was a British author, bibliophile , Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

John Rutter Chorley was the older brother of the author and critic Henry Fothergill Chorley (1808–1872). In addition to his job in the railway administration, he trained as a private scholar. In contact with George Ticknor , Cayetano Alberto de la Barrera (1815–1872) and the British Museum (to which he left his treasures) he collected editions of the Spanish theater, which he provided with scholarly notes, and thus became a forerunner of British Hispanic studies .

Thomas Carlyle was one of his friends .
