Hugo Albert Rennert

Hugo Albert Rennert (born May 6, 1858 in Philadelphia , † December 31, 1927 there ) was an American Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

Rennert first studied engineering and law and worked as an engineer and lawyer. Then he switched to philology. In 1885 the University of Pennsylvania hired him as an instructor for French and German. He went to Europe, studied with Karl Vollmöller in Göttingen in 1891 and received his doctorate in Freiburg with Gottfried Baist in 1892 with the work The Spanish Pastoral Romances (Baltimore 1892, Philadelphia 1912, New York 1968). From 1895 he was professor of Romance philology at his home university.

In 1912 he was elected as Comendador to the Orden de Isabel la Católica . In 1914 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the law faculty of his university.
