James Fitzmaurice-Kelly

James Fitzmaurice-Kelly (born June 20, 1858 in Glasgow , † November 30, 1923 in Sydenham , Outer London ) was a British Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

James Kelly, who later added his mother's name to his name and called himself James Fitzmaurice-Kelly, learned Spanish as a child. He attended St Charles's Catholic College in Kensington and turned to literary journalism. In 1885 he went to Jerez de la Frontera as a private tutor and from there to Madrid in order to socialize with literary circles, among others he was friends with Juan Valera and Gaspar Núñez de Arce .

In 1886 he went back to England and published important books on Spanish literary history, which eventually earned him Hispanic teaching posts and chairs, in 1908 as a lecturer at Cambridge University , from 1909 to 1916 on the Gilmour Chair at the University of Liverpool and from 1909 to 1916 From 1916 until his retirement in 1920 on the Cervantes Chair at the University of London, which was set up for him .

Fitzmaurice-Kelly was a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española (1895), the Real Academia Historica (1912) and the Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona (1914). In 1906 he was elected a member of the British Academy . He was Commander of the Order de Alfonso XII. (1905).
