Karl Vollmöller

Karl Vollmöller (born October 16, 1848 in Ilsfeld , † July 8, 1922 in Dresden ) a German Romance and English studies . He was a professor for Romance and English languages ​​in Erlangen and Göttingen. As a patron of his hometown Ilsfeld, he was made an honorary citizen there in 1906.

Karl Vollmöller was born as the son of the businessman Rudolf Vollmöller (1818–1854) and Sophie Dallinger, b. Lust (1807–1874) born in Ilsfeld. He attended secondary school in Heilbronn and worked as a businessman from 1863 to 1867. In 1868/69 he obtained his university entrance qualification in Stuttgart and studied from 1870 to 1872 in Tübingen , then from 1872 to 1873 in Bonn and Munich classical, German and Romance philology. In 1874 he moved to the Sorbonne in Paris. Through his friendship with Rudolf Lindau (writer) , the former private secretary of Napoleon's illegitimate son Jules Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire , he became a friend and travel companion of the Spanish King Alfonso XII . Alfonso XII made it possible for Vollmöller to conduct research in 1875 in the royal archives, which had been closed to foreigners until then. Vollmöller completed his habilitation in Strasbourg in 1876 and worked there as a private lecturer. In 1877 he received an appointment as associate professor for Romance and English philology at the University of Erlangen . In 1881 he was appointed full professor for Romance and English languages ​​at the University of Göttingen . After his marriage to Theodora Elisabeth Mirus , Vollmöller resigned his teaching post in Göttingen in 1891 and the family moved to Dresden, where they had numerous possessions from the legacy of Vollmöller's wife and where he worked as a private scholar, editor and author. He justified u. a. the journal Romanische Forschungen and published numerous writings.

After the great fire disaster in Ilsfeld in 1904, Vollmöller donated considerable funds to build a nursing home for small children on the site of his parents who had burned down. The nursing home was named after Vollmöller's wife Theodora Elisabeth Mirus Dorastift and also received a bathtub facility available to the population. For his foundation, he was made an honorary citizen of Ilsfeld in 1906 together with his brother Robert Vollmöller and four other people who had earned the reconstruction.

Vollmöller died in Dresden in 1922 and was buried in the Trinity cemetery.
