Gottfried Baist

Gottfried Baist (born February 28, 1853 in Ulfa (Nidda) , † October 22, 1920 in Freiburg i.Br. ) was a German Romance and Hispanic scholar. His father was the pastor Gustav Baist ; his uncle was the chemist and entrepreneur Ludwig Baist .

life and work

Baist studied Romance languages, history and German language and literature in Giessen and with Conrad Hofmann in Munich. He received his doctorate in 1880 in Erlangen with Karl Vollmöller Hispanic with age and text transmission of the writings of Don Juan Manuel (Halle aS 1880), was there from 1884 an assessor at the library and habilitated in 1889 with Hermann Varnhagen on the Arabic breath sounds and gutturals in Spanish (Erlangen 1889 ). From 1891 to 1918, he succeeded Fritz Neumann as a full professor of Romance philology in Freiburg . In the 1909/10 year of office he was also rector there.
