life and work

Baist came from Upper Hesse and completed an apprenticeship in the oldest Frankfurt pharmacy, the deer pharmacy first mentioned in 1462 . After lengthy educational trips abroad, he returned to the Free City of Frankfurt in 1850 . Together with the Darmstadt mint master Hektor Roessler , he first founded a refinery , which was soon renamed Chemische Fabrik Louis Baist & Co. and relocated to Bockenheim in the Electorate of Hesse .

In 1856, with the support of Frankfurt merchants, Baist founded the Frankfurter Actiengesellschaft for agricultural chemical products in Griesheim am Main . Among his business partners were Friedrich Ernst Roessler - the founder of the Deutsche Gold- und Silber-Scheideanstalt , Jean Andreae , Friedrich Bolongaro and Ludwig Göckel . Since the Free City of Frankfurt did not allow any industrial settlements on its site, Baist avoided the neighboring Duchy of Nassau , which encouraged such settlements.

In 1863 the company was renamed under the name Chemischen Fabrik Griesheim am Main . The company initially produced artificial fertilizers , soon followed by sulfuric acid , nitric acid and soda . From the beginning it has focused on intermediates for the needs of the emerging chemical industry. In 1882, chlorinated hydrocarbons and products derived from them were added, which were needed for the production of indigo and chloroform .
