Johannes (Jean) Andreae (1780–1850)

Johannes Andreae , also Johann Andreae, called Jean, (born September 4, 1780 in Frankfurt am Main , † April 13, 1850 ibid) was a German spice and dye merchant and banker.

Life

Johannes Andreae, or Jean, as he was called in the family, was the eldest son of Christoph Andreae (1736–1789) from his third marriage to Maria Magdalena Hoppe (1752–1821). After completing the education and commercial training that was customary at the time, at the age of 25, according to his father's will, he joined the Andreae brothers' specialty and dyestuff shop, which had been run by his half-brother Johann Matthias in the previous years. In the following year his youngest brother Bernhard joined as a further partner, with whom he ran the business for 30 years until the end of 1835.

Jean Andreae was a restless, level-headed and practical businessman, a small, fine gentleman in his appearance. His only hobby besides business was the love of botany inherited from his father. The correspondence between Marianne von Willemer and Goethe shows that he sent the poet a colossal cactus as a gift in November 1822 after a visit to Weimar.

On March 29, 1809 he married the 16 year old Maximiliane Willemer (called Maxe), the youngest daughter of Johann Jakob Willemer . The two families had been neighbors since 1765, when the Andreae brothers acquired the house at 57 Töngesgasse . In 1820 Andreae acquired the house at Hochstrasse 46 with a spacious garden, greenhouse and pond.

The marriage resulted in 15 children, 12 of whom were older. Her children included the mechanical engineer Abraham Andreae , called Brami, and the painter Tobias Andreae .

The third wife of the father Johann Jacob von Willemer, Marianne von Willemer , was closely connected to Jean and Maximiliane Andreae. This is evidenced by, among other things, a correspondence with Goethe in which she reports about the impending birth of another grandchild (Bfw. 149 of July 17, 1831): “... I am also expecting a new grandchild from my daughter Maxe Andreae in August, and may the grandmother be missing? ”The grandchild's name was Anna and was born on August 4th, 1831.

Jean Andreae was a member of the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce (1820–1826) and an administrative member of the orphanage. Until 1817 he was a member of the Permanent Citizens' Representation and in 1817 and 1830 to 1834 the Legislative Body .

He died at the age of 70, his widow Maximiliane survived him by 21 years and died on June 3, 1871. They found their final resting place in Frankfurt's main cemetery . Marianne von Willemer also found her final resting place on her grave ( Gewann D 260-261).

The property in Hochstrasse was sold in 1872 for the construction of the Frankfurt Opera House .
