Eugene Pierer

Eugen Pierer (born December 23, 1823 in Altenburg ; † January 19, 1890 there ) was a German publisher.

Life

Pierer, son of the publisher Heinrich August Pierer , attended secondary school in Leipzig and then completed an apprenticeship in Teubner's book printing company. After the death of his father in 1850, he became the sole managing director of the Altenburger Hofbuchdruckerei. Under Eugen Pierer was working on the first molded modern and not censorship underlying general lexicon , the Piererschen Universallexikon successfully continued. The third edition appeared in 1854 and a fifth, improved edition was published by 1871, strengthening the position of the “Pierer”, which was outstanding at that time compared to the “ Brockhaus ” and initially also the “ Meyer ” in the German-speaking area .

Eugen's brother Alfred Pierer joined the company in 1859 and Eugen Pierer was then responsible for the printing department. In November 1871, Eugen Pierer sold the printing company to a consortium led by Stephan Geibel. After that he published school and technical books.
