Herbert Schifter

Herbert Schifter (born June 15, 1937 in Vienna , † February 7, 2017 in Graz ) was an Austrian ornithologist . His research focus was the mouse birds (Coliidae).

Life

After studying zoology and botany, he was in December 1964 with a thesis on the reproductive behavior and the development of the young mouse birds (Coliidae) at William Marinelli Dr. phil. PhD at the University of Vienna . In 1965 he was a research assistant with Professor Heini Hediger at Zurich Zoo . In 1966 he received a scholarship and from January 1969 he became a permanent employee of the bird collection at the Natural History Museum Vienna . From 1972 until his retirement in 1994 he was curator of the museum's bird department. From 1970 to 1993 he held various positions at the Austrian Society for Ornithology, today BirdLife Austria . First he was executive chairman and, after a change in the statutes, from 1979 deputy chairman. From 1970 to 1993 he represented Austria at the International Council for Bird Breservation (ICBP, today BirdLife International ).

Schifter published more than 170 articles, many of which appeared in international journals. He undertook several collection expeditions that took him to Turkey, the Canary Islands and Africa. In Austria he coordinated the white stork counts from 1975 to 1984. His main interests, however, are the mouse birds, about which he wrote a book in 1972 with the title Die Mausvögel. Coliidae wrote. He also wrote the article about the mouse birds in Grzimek's animal life . In 1975 he first described two subspecies of the blue-necked mouse bird , Urocolius macrourus abyssinicus from central and southern Ethiopia and from northern Somalia and Urocolius macrourus massaicus from central and eastern Tanzania. In collaboration with Gurner Cunningham van Someren (1913-1997), he described 1981 subspecies Pseudalethe poliocephala giloensis the Braunbrustalethe and the subspecies Pogonocichla stellata pallidiflava of Sternrötels from the Southern Sudan .

Schifter was a member of BirdLife Austria, the Zoological-Botanical Society , the German Ornithological Society , the Societe Ornithologique de France , the Ornithological Society of the Middle East , the West African Ornithological Society, the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science and a corresponding member of German Federation for Bird Protection (today NABU ). He was a scientific advisor for the magazine “ Current from the Bird World” .
