Andrew John Berger (born August 30, 1915 in Warren , Ohio , † July 4, 1995 in Hawaii ) was an American ornithologist and anatomist .

Life

In 1939 Berger graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin , Ohio with a bachelor's degree. From 1940 to 1941 he conducted field studies as part of wildlife management at the University of Missouri . In 1942 he married Edith Grace Denniston. From this marriage the children John Denniston Berger and Diana Marie Berger emerged. From 1941 to 1946 he served as an officer in the United States Army Air Corps. After the war, he continued his military service as a reservist in the United States Army Air Forces and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant colonel . In 1946, Berger enrolled at the University of Michigan , where he obtained his master’s degree in 1947 and his doctorate in zoology in 1950 with the dissertationThe comparative functional morphology of the pelvic appendage in the three subfamilies of cuculiformes ” . From 1951 to 1963 he taught macroscopic anatomy at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Between 1954 and the end of 1963 he conducted field studies to research the way of life and breeding behavior of the Michigan warbler.

In the spring semester of 1964 he accepted a visiting professorship at the University of Hawaii at Manoa . After teaching for a year at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India, he returned to Hawaii and twice chaired the zoology department of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Although his initial interests were in the morphology, behavior and classification of the cuckoos , from 1965 he specialized in researching the natural history and living conditions of the endemic avifauna of the Hawaiian Islands. In addition, Andrew John Berger was a committed conservationist who had successfully supported nature conservation organizations in lawsuits against the US government with his expert knowledge. In a process for the preservation of the Palilas , he campaigned for not only the species itself to be protected, but also its habitat.

Andrew John Berger wrote several works on the Hawaiian avifauna, particularly on the Hawaiigans . He also wrote books on the anatomy of birds and humans. In 1957 he wrote the extensive article " On the anatomy and relationships of Fregilupus varius, an extinct starling from the Mascarene Islands " for the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History , where he wrote about the extinct Hop Starling ( Fregilupus varius ) and its relationship to others Bird families lectured.

Berger was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the American Ornithologists' Union, and the National Audubon Society of Michigan .
