Werner Rathmayer (born March 7, 1937 in Lindau ; † January 22, 2003 in Konstanz ) was a German biologist and university professor.

life and work

Rathmayer studied biology , chemistry and geology at the University of Munich . He received his doctorate in 1962 with Martin Lindauer at the Zoological Institute of the University of Munich with the thesis The Paralysis Problem in the Beewolf, Philanthus Triangulum F. (Hym. Sphec.) . After a DFG- funded research stay with Ernst Florey at the University of Washington in Seattle , he worked from 1964 to 1968 as a research assistant at Lindauer, who was meanwhile at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1967 he completed his habilitation there with the text The control of leg movements in the tarantula .

Shortly after his habilitation in 1968, he was given a chair in zoology and neurobiology at the University of Konstanz , which he held until his sudden death in 2003.

Act

His research focus was mainly on neuromuscular mechanisms in arthropods . In his dissertation on the topic “The problem of paralyzing the beewolf Philanthus.” He dealt with the paralyzing effect of wasp venom on bees. As a result, he investigated the mechanisms of nerve-muscle interactions, using complex electrophysiological and biochemical methods. He conducted experiments on the effect of neuromodulatory substances and animal toxins on neuromuscular transmission. As part of his habilitation, he dealt with the neuromuscular control and proprioceptors of the legs of the wolf spiders . Further research areas were the circulatory system of crustaceans ( hemolymph ) and ornithology .

Werner Rathmayer had been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1995 . Since 1989 he has been the editor of the journal “Advances in Zoology”.

In memory of Rathmayer, who was President of the German Zoological Society in 1989/1990 and a long-time juror at Jugend forscht , the Werner Rathmayer Prize has been awarded annually since 2004 for original work in zoology.
