Heinz Penzlin

Heinz Penzlin (born January 26, 1932 in Waren (Müritz) ) is an emeritus professor of general zoology and animal physiology at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena .

biography

Heinz Penzlin is the son of Gustav Penzlin (* 1894 in Penzlin, +1955 in Waren). After studying zoology in Rostock with a degree in biology, he got a job as a scientific assistant at the university there in 1954. A promotion to senior assistant followed in 1959. After his doctorate in 1956 and his habilitation in 1962, he was appointed university lecturer in the field of general zoology in Rostock in January 1963. In 1970 the first edition of his "Textbook of Animal Physiology" was published by Fischer Verlag Jena.

In 1974 he was appointed to the chair for general zoology and animal physiology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. In addition to visiting professorships at the universities of Mosul (winter semester 1978/1979) and Vienna, he was also active as editor and curator of several specialist magazines ("Zoological Yearbooks", "Biology in Our Time"). In 1981 he was elected as a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and in 1996 as a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . In 1996 he was also elected Vice President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences.

In 1997 he was elected Vice President of the Association of German Biologists . In the same year he retired from his professorship in Jena. In 2000 he was re-elected as Vice President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences. On October 28, 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Rostock for his "complete works in the field of animal physiology, especially the developmental and neurobiology of insects, as well as theoretical biology". In 2008 Penzlin was made an honorary member of the German Zoological Society .

In the course of his work in the field of biology, he wrote about 200 papers in specialist journals, his "Textbook of Animal Physiology" was published in the 7th edition in 2006. He is married to Hannelore Penzlin, b. Black, and has two children.
