Jürgen Ritter (painter)

Jürgen Ritter (born February 9, 1925 in Gera ; † May 21, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German painter, draftsman and graphic artist who is best known for his depictions of animals, plants and landscapes, which are found in numerous school books and encyclopedias were published.

Life

Ritter lived in Bad Köstritz from 1930 to 1950 . In 1941 his school days, which he spent in Gera and Bad Köstritz, ended. He then began an artistic training course as a set designer at the stage class at the Leipzig School of Applied Arts, but this was interrupted by military service. After the war he worked for a while at the Gera Theater . From 1947 to 1950 he studied at the Leipzig College of Graphics and Book Art . Since 1950 he worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist. Ritter undertook several study trips to Germany ( Thuringia , North and Baltic Seas , Franconia , Thiersee , area around Munich ) but also abroad ( Greece , Ischia , France , Italy , Spain , Portugal , Yugoslavia , England , Ireland and Africa ). Here he illustrated various animal and plant species, but also people and landscapes, using various drawing techniques. The abstract painting was one of Ritter's character styles. Ritter's illustrations can be found in many encyclopedias and non-fiction books, including Grzimek's animal life . Exhibitions of his works have been held at the Völkerkundemuseum Berlin , the Hanfstaengl Gallery in Munich and Vienna , among others . Ritter lived in Munich and Thiersee between 1970 and 2009. He died in Berlin in May 2010.
