Gerard Frederick van Tets

Gerard Frederick van Tets (born January 19, 1929 in London , † January 14, 1995 in Canberra , Australia ), also known as Jerry van Tets , was an English, Canadian and Australian ornithologist and paleontologist . His research interests included cormorants , petrels and other water birds.

Live and act

After studying at the University of British Columbia , van Tets received his Ph.D. In November 1963 he married Patrice Anne Johnston in Vancouver , British Columbia . After his marriage, he moved to Australia and joined the CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology in Canberra . Gerard Frederick van Tets initially conducted studies on the effects of bird strikes on airfields. He later joined the Australian National Wildlife Collection . Van Tets described some subfossil bird species, including the penguin species Tasidyptes hunteri , which was synonymous with the recent thick-billed penguin ( Eudyptes pachyrhynchus ) in 2017 . The Tasman booby ( Sula dactylatra tasmani ), which was originally known only from bone material, was synonymous with the recent masked booby subspecies Sula dactylatra fullagari from Lord Howe Island in 2009. The extinct New Zealand duck species Oxyura vantetsi is named after him.
