Theodor Rosetti (born May 5, 1837 in Vaslui-Soleşti , † July 17, 1923 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian writer, journalist, lawyer, diplomat, politician and statesman.

Life

He was the son of Gheorghe Rosetti and Caterina Sturdza and the brother of Elena Cuza , the future wife of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza . Rosetti studied finance and political science in Lviv and Vienna as well as law in Paris . After graduating, he was a judge in Iași and a professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Iași .

Theodor Rosetti was one of the founding members of the Junimea literary society in 1863, which later became the conservative party of the Junimists . As a diplomat he headed the first Romanian diplomatic mission in Berlin in 1872 . This was followed by his political rise to prime minister of the country . From January 7, 1875 to March 31, 1876 he was Minister of Agriculture in the Catargiu cabinet. Theodor Rosetti took over the office of Prime Minister from March 23, 1888 to November 11, 1888 or from November 12, 1888 to March 26, 1889 in the so-called "Junimistenkabinett". In the first term of office he also occupied the post of Minister of the Interior.

He also held other offices. In the period from November 12, 1888 to March 22, 1889, Rosetti was President of the Council of Ministers and from November 5, 1889 to November 15, 1890 Minister of Justice and until 1885 Governor of the National Bank . He also became an honorary member of the Romanian Academy in 1891 and a judge at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 1906 . In the Maiorescu government he was Minister of Finance from March 18, 1912 to October 14, 1912 and a year later from March 27 to July 3, 1913 President of the Senate. Theodor Rosetti died in Bucharest at the age of 85.
