Elena Cuza

Elena Cuza (born June 17, 1825 in Iași ; † April 2, 1909 in Piatra Neamț ) was the wife of Alexandru Ioan Cuza , the first prince of Romania .

Life

Elena Cuza was born Elena Rosetti in Iași and grew up on her parents' estate in Solesti in Vaslui County . At 15 she moved to Iași and met Alexandru Ioan Cuza , whom she married in 1844. When Alexandru Ioan Cuza became Prince of Moldova on January 5, 1859 and Prince of Wallachia on January 24, 1859 , and in 1861 proclaimed the establishment of the new state of Romania from the “United Principality of Wallachia and Moldova”, Elena became the first lady in the state .

During her husband's reign, Cuza became known as a philanthropist . In 1862 she founded the "Azilul Elena Doamna", an orphanage for girls, in Cotroceni, a suburb of Bucharest .

When Alexandru Ioan Cuza was forced to abdicate due to domestic political conflicts in 1866 with the approval of the great powers by the nobles, Elena went into exile with him. After the death of her husband in 1873 Elena returned to her homeland. She died on April 2, 1909 in Piatra Neamț.

Posthumous honors

In numerous Romanian cities, educational institutions and hospitals were named after Elena Cuza:

  • “Elena Doamna Maternity Hospital” in Elena Cuza's native city of Iași
  • "Colegiul de industry Alimentară Elena Doamna" (College of Food Industry) in Galati in the West of Moldova
  • "Colegiul Național Elena Cuza" in Craiova (founded in 1833 as the first girls' school in the territory of the later Principality of Romania, renamed in 1998 in honor of Elena Cuza)
  • “Colegiul Național Elena Cuza” in Bucharest
  • “Centrul Școlar pentru Educație Incluzivă Elena Doamna” ( school center focused on special education for the deaf ) in Focşani
  • “Coala Gimnazială Elena Cuza” in Vaslui
  • "Școala cu clasele I-VIII Elena Cuza" in Piatra Neamț
  • "Școala Elena Doamna" in Ploieşti

In Iași and Ploiești a street was named “Strada Elena Doamna”, in Bucharest and Constanța there is a “Strada Elena Cuza” each.
