Atto Vannucci (born December 1, 1808 in Tobbiana , † June 10, 1883 in Florence ) was an Italian historian and professor of humanities.

Life

Atto Vannucci was originally intended for the clergy but left the seminary to devote himself to historical studies. At the age of 23 he got a job as a professor of humanities and later history at the Collegio Cicognini in Prato.

As a politically committed lecturer, Vannucci was involved in the political processes of the Risorgimento from the start . During the revolutionary years of 1848/49 he lived a few years as an exile abroad: in France , England , Belgium , Switzerland , where he taught universal history in 1852/53 . He later lived and worked in France again and was able to return to Florence in 1856.

By the new Italian government under Prime Minister Camillo Benso von Cavour , Vannucci was rehabilitated and in 1859 appointed librarian at the Biblioteca Magliabechiana . As such, he later accepted a position as professor for Roman literature at the Istituto di studi superiori in Florence. In 1848 he was admitted to the Accademia della Crusca , in 1865 he was appointed Senator of the Kingdom , and in 1875 he was admitted to the Accademia dei Lincei . In 1878 Vannucci resigned from all offices and settled in Florence. There he died at the age of 74 on June 10, 1883.
