Johann August Roderich von Stintzing (born February 8, 1825 in Altona , † September 13, 1883 in Oberstdorf ) was a German lawyer and legal historian .

Life

Roderich Stintzing was a son of the Altona doctor Johann Wilhelm Stintzing (* December 30, 1789 in Rendsburg; † July 17, 1859 in Altona) and his wife Wilhelmine Elisabeth Niemann, who was married on March 25, 1824 (* March 21, 1794 in Kiel; † April 21, 1866 in Hamburg). The paternal grandfather, the wine merchant and freight forwarder Johann Georg Stintzing (1739–1818), originally came from Franconia and had settled in Rendsburg . August Christian Niemann , maternal grandfather, was Professor of Political and Forest Sciences at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . After graduation in Hamburg studied Stintzing 1841-1848 Law at the Universities of Jena , Heidelberg , Berlin and Kiel . He received a special influence in Heidelberg from the lawyer Adolph von Vangerow and in Berlin from the legal philosopher Friedrich Julius Stahl .

Despite the Schleswig-Holstein uprising , Stintzing passed his state examination in law at the Higher Appeal Court in Kiel . He then worked as a lawyer and notary in Plön . After the end of the Schleswig-Holstein War , he went to Heidelberg in 1851 , where Stintzing received his doctorate in law on January 5, 1852. After a short time as a private lecturer , he was appointed full professor at the University of Basel at Easter 1854 . In the fall of 1857, Stintzing accepted a position at the University of Erlangen . In 1870 he moved to the chair for Roman law at the University of Bonn , where he succeeded Eduard Böcking . In 1875/76 he was the rector of the university.

In 1861 Stintzing received the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael and in 1868 he was raised to the personal nobility by being awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown .

Stintzing married on May 1, 1850 in Plön Franziska Karoline Bokelmann (1828-1908), the daughter of the Danish Minister-Resident and secret legation councilor Georg Wilhelm Bokelmann (1779-1847) and his wife Sophie Sillem, who was married in 1820. The marriage resulted in seven children, of whom four sons and two daughters survived:
