August Christian Heinrich Niemann (born January 30, 1761 in Altona ; † May 21, 1832 in Kiel ) was a German forest and camera scientist . As a university lecturer in Kiel, he became known for his collection and poetry of student songs.

Life

Niemann began studying law at the University of Jena in 1780 . After three semesters he moved to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . He was the court master of a noble fellow student . With him he went to the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 1782 to study camera science. In 1783 he returned to Kiel, where he became a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . He completed his habilitation in 1785 and initially taught statistics and police science .

Under the influence of the Jenenser and Göttingen student days, Niemann published his well-known Academic Songbook , in which he collected songs and presented his own poems, including Landesvater, Schutz and Rater . The homage and covenant song goes back to earlier versions from the 17th century and is still sung in Niemann's version (heavily abridged) on large commers of many student associations . It is followed in the Academic Songbook by the song Heil, Kaiser Joseph, Heil , which became the model for numerous German prince and state anthems based on the melody of the British royal anthem .

Niemann was appointed associate professor in Kiel in 1787 and took over the position of director of the newly opened forestry school in Kiel . From then on he devoted himself entirely to forest science and its importance in the state economy. In 1788 he set up the forest tree nursery in Kiel-Düsternbrook, which today still exists as a (popular) restaurant in a heavily modified form . In 1794 Niemann became full professor . In 1811/12 and 1829/30 he was rector of the CAU.

He dedicated himself in a special way to poor relief and social welfare and was a co-founder of the Kiel society of voluntary poor friends . The “fine” Niemannsweg in Düsternbrook , which is characterized by villas , was named after him by a resolution of the city of Kiel on June 4, 1869.
