Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (born April 12, 1883 in Edinburgh , † December 6, 1937 in Edinburgh) was a British painter from the group of Scottish colorists .

Life

At the age of 16 Cadell went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian . The contact with the French avant-garde , Fauvism and especially the closeness to Henri Matisse were instrumental in the development of his artistic work. After returning to Scotland, his work was exhibited regularly in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London .

Cadell created numerous landscapes, interiors, still lifes and figurative representations in both oils and watercolors . However, he is best known for his portraits in vivid colors.

One of his favorite landscapes was the Scottish Hebridean island of Iona , which he first visited in 1912 and which plays a central role in his landscape paintings. In the 1920s he spent several summers there with Samuel Peploe , another painter from the group of Scottish colorists .

His younger sister was the actress Jean Cadell .
