Jean Cadell (born September 13, 1884 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † September 24, 1967 in London , England ) was a British actress.

life and career

Over a period of over 50 years she has appeared on both British and American theater stages, about four times on Broadway and in London. In addition, she appeared in almost 60 film and television productions between 1912 and 1962. Because of her fiery red hair, at least in her early films, she was used in dynamic roles, such as a sharp-tongued wife or self-confident housekeeper. Her only trip to Hollywood was the supporting role of Mrs. Micwaber in George Cukor's literary adaptation David Copperfield , although her biggest scene - the emigration of her family to Australia - was removed from the finished film. Otherwise she appeared in British films, for example in the George Bernhard Shaw film adaptation of the novel of a flower girl and the comedy Joy to life from the Ealing Studios . In the early 1960s she retired from the acting business.

Cadell's older brother was the artist Francis Cadell . She was married to the actor Percival Clarke, their son was the later theater agent John Cadell (* 1915). Jean Cadell's grandchildren Patrick, Simon and Selina Cadell also became actors.
