After attending Bedales School in Petersfield, Hampshire, he made his first stage appearance in 1967 with the National Youth Theater in a Peter Tearson theater production. He then joined the Bristol Old Vic Theater School and began his acting career in the late 1960s with roles in the theater and in British TV series. He made his debut as a television actor in 1969 in the series Hadleigh .
In addition to his career at the theater, Cadell played in around 30 cinema and television productions, where he had appearances in feature films, series, television films and television miniseries. Cadell played more complex TV roles from 1980 to 1984 in the series Hi-de-Hi! in 33 episodes, where he embodied the character of Jeffrey Fairbrother.
His appearances in movies focused on a few productions. He took on the speaking role in the popular British cartoon Watership Down , as well as a small part as the BBC News Reporter in the disaster film Meteor . He had his most striking cinema appearance in the role of the psychopathic doctor in the Friedrich Dürrenmatt film adaptation of Death in the Cold Morning Light by Dutch director Rudolf van den Berg shortly before his death.
Simon Cadell died of cancer on March 6, 1996 at the age of 45.
He was married to British actress Rebecca Croft from 1985 until his death, with her he had two sons. Cadell was the stepson of comedy writer and director David Croft, the stepbrother of Penny Croft and Michael Thomas, and the cousin of Patrick Caddell and Guy Siner.
