Louis von Arentsschildt

Louis (Ludwig) Friedrich Daniel von Arentsschildt , also Arentsschild (born July 29, 1807 in Osnabrück , † April 5, 1883 in Neuenheim ) was a royal Hanoverian officer, poet and translator .

Life

He came from a family with a great military tradition and was the son of the royal Hanoverian prime lieutenant Karl von Arentsschildt (* 1777) and his wife Jakobine von Drieberg (1783-1816). Other relatives of his were Lieutenant Viktor Friedrich von Arentsschildt and his descendants Wilhelm von Arentsschildt , Lieutenant General , (1840–1911).

Arentsschildt joined the Royal Hanoverian Army as a cadet in 1825 and began his career as an officer in 1826. In 1835 he left the military to study at the University of Göttingen . In 1862 he was released from the army as a colonel at his own request . From then on he lived in retirement until his death in Neuenheim.

He devoted himself to poetry throughout his life . Karl Goedeke says of him: “He succeeds in depicting both the gentle and the strong male emotions equally well.” He also worked as a translator and transferred, among other things. a. Verses by the Portuguese national poet Luis Vaz de Camões and by Francisco de Sá de Miranda in German. Above all , Camoes' sonnets , canzons and elegies were translated by him.
