Nate Cartmell (actually: Nathanael John Cartmell ; born January 13, 1883 in Union County , Kentucky , † August 23, 1967 in Forest Hills , New York City ) was an American sprinter who was successful at the beginning of the 20th century. He participated in two Olympic Games and won four medals.
At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , he started over 60, 100 and 200 meters. Over 60 meters he only made it to the semifinals, but won the silver medal over 100 and 200 meters in front of William Hogenson . The winner over both distances was Archie Hahn , who was clearly inferior to Cartmell in 11.2 and 21.9 s (these were estimated times, since only the victory time was stopped) compared to 11.0 and 21.6 s. Four years later at the Olympic Games in London in 1908 Cartmell was able to repeat his time from St. Louis, but this time 11.2 s were only enough for fourth place. He was more lucky over the 200-meter distance, over which he was third in a moderate 22.7 s behind the Canadian Robert Kerr and his compatriot Robert Cloughen (both 22.6 s).
He finally won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the Olympic relay (200 m / 200 m / 400 m / 800 m), which was only held in London, with William Hamilton as second runner, Cartmell as second runner, John Taylor and Mel Sheppard in 3:29 , 4 min was well ahead of the German (silver in 3: 32.4 min) and the Hungarian team (bronze in 3: 32.5 min).
Cartmell won a total of six IC4A championships:
year | 100 yards (s) | 220 yards (s) |
---|---|---|
1906 | 10.2 | 23.4 |
1907 | 10.0 | 21.8 |
1908 | 10.6 | 22.0 |
At the British AAA Championships in London in 1909 , he won gold over 220 yards. After finishing his active career, he worked as a trainer at the University of Pennsylvania . He was 1.82 m tall and weighed 71 kg.
