Charles Méré

Auguste Charles Alexandre Méré (born January 29, 1883 in Marseille , † October 2, 1970 in Paris ) was a French playwright, screenwriter and librettist.

Life

Méré emerged after 1900 as the author of a number of dramas, some of which can be assigned to the genre of Grand-Guignol . Several of his plays were filmed. He also wrote some opera libretti and in the 1940s also screenplays (such as Févre and L'âge d'or , both in 1942). He directed the films La Vénus de l'or (1937), Serge Panine (1939) and Fortuné de Marseille (based on his play Un Homme du Nord ).

Some of his pieces have been adapted several times: Le Trois Masques was premiered in 1908 and in the same year formed the basis for Albert Capellani's silent film Le corso tragique . In 1912 the piece was performed as an opera by Isidore de Lara at the Grand Théâtre in Marseille. Henry Krauss turned a second silent film version in 1921 , and the 1929 film adaptation of André Hugon was the first French-language sound film.

Between 1929 and 1944 Méré was intermittently president of the Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques (SACD).
