LeRoy Samse
LeRoy Perry Samse (born September 13, 1883 - May 1, 1956 in Sherman Oaks , Los Angeles) was an American athlete who was successful as a pole vaulter at the beginning of the 20th century . He jumped a world record and won an Olympic silver medal.
For the pole vault final of the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , six Americans and the German Paul Weinstein competed . Olympic champion was Charles Dvorak with the Olympic record of 3.50 m. Four other Americans finished the competition with a skipped 3.35 m, with LeRoy Samse being awarded 2nd place due to the fewest number of unsuccessful attempts.
In the following two years Samse set four world records:
- Open air:
- 3.74 m and 3.78 m on June 2, 1906 at Evanston
- Hall:
- 3.44 m on March 11, 1905 in Milwaukee
- 3.49 m on January 22, 1906 in Cincinnati
In 1906 he won the US championship with 3.48 m.
