Conrad of Bavaria (1910)

Konrad Luitpold Franz Joseph Maria von Bayern (born November 22, 1883 in Munich , † September 6, 1969 in Hinterstein ) was a Prince of Bavaria until 1918 . From December 14, 1901 to 1918, he was a member of the Chamber of Imperial Councils of the Bavarian Estates Assembly (18th to 21st electoral period).

Life

Konrad was born as the fourth child of Prince Leopold of Bavaria and his wife, Archduchess Gisela of Austria . Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria were his maternal grandparents. On his father's side, he came from the Bavarian royal line, his grandfather was Luitpold von Bayern , Prince Regent from 1886 to 1912.

Conrad of Bavaria (1902)

Prince Konrad was the last commander of the 2nd Heavy Rider Regiment . It fought mainly on the Eastern Front during the First World War . It was stationed in Landshut and was disbanded on February 6, 1919.

On January 8, 1921, Prince Konrad married Princess Bona Margherita of Savoy-Genoa , the daughter of Prince Tomaso of Savoy-Genoa and Princess Isabella of Bavaria . The wedding took place at Castello Agliè in Piedmont , Italy.

From 1930 on Konrad was Prince of Bavaria a. a. Manager of the Alpe Mitterhaus .

At the end of the Second World War , Prince Konrad was arrested by the French military in Hinterstein, brought to Lindau and temporarily interned in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. a. with the German Crown Prince Wilhelm and the former Nazi diplomat Hans Georg von Mackensen . Princess Bona, who worked as a nurse during the war, stayed with her relatives in Savoy afterwards . She was forbidden to enter Germany and was only reunited with her family in 1947. In the later years, Prince Konrad worked on the board of the German car manufacturer NSU Motorenwerke .

He is buried in the Wittelsbach family cemetery in Andechs Monastery , where his coffin was transferred in 1977 from the “Princely Crypt” of St. Michael (Munich) . His son Eugen Leopold also rests there.

Marriage and offspring

On January 8, 1921, he married Princess Bona Margherita of Savoy-Genoa at Agliè Castle in Piedmont . They had two children:

  • Amalie Isabella Marie Gisela Margarete , Princess of Bavaria (* December 15, 1921 - March 28, 1985) ⚭ 1945 Umberto Poletti-Galimberti, Count of Assandri (1921–1995)
  • Eugen Leopold Adelheid Thomas Maria, Prince of Bavaria (* July 16, 1925 - January 1, 1997) ⚭ 1970 Countess Helene ("Hella") von Khevenhüller -Metsch (1921–2017)
