The Spies Hecker paint company was also founded in the 1880s. At the turn of the century, permanent paints and nitrocellulose paints were also produced. A paint company founded by Kurt Herberts' grandson merged with Herberts in 1924 and the grandson later took over the management. In the 1920s, the US company DuPont de Nemours commissioned Spies Hecker in Germany to manufacture car paint. In the 1960s, among other things, powder coatings for pipelines were produced, in the 1970s polyurethane coatings and in the 1980s insulating topcoats. In the 1990s, DuPont took over Herbert's paint business and the first spectrophotometer was introduced. Electrical sheet enamel was also introduced for electrical steel coatings. In the 2000s, plants were established in China and India in order to open up the Asian market.

On August 30, 2012, DuPont de Nemours announced that it had entered into an agreement with the Carlyle Group to sell DuPont Performance Coatings (DPC) for $ 4.9 billion and merged with Axalta. On February 1, 2013, Axalta finally became an independent company.
