The Association of the European Chemical Industry ( CEFIC from French: Conseil Européen des Fédérations de l'Industrie Chimique ), today's proper name European Chemical Industry Council , is the trade association of the European chemical industry based in Brussels. CEFIC represents the political interests of the chemical industry at the European level. The international work is controlled by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), of which the CEFIC is a member.

history

The association was founded in 1957 under the name Secrétariat International des Groupements Professionnels des Industries Chimiques des Pays de la CEE (SIIC). Two years later, the Conseil Européen des Fédérations de l'Industrie Chimique (CEFIC) was founded. Initially only the chemical companies of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) were organized there. It was only in 1972 that the two organizations merged under the name CEFIC in order to better represent the interests of European industry in the international chemical association.

In 1990 the organization was renamed and has been called the European Chemical Industry Council since then . The acronym CEFIC was retained.

From October 2014 Jean-Pierre Clamadieu ( Solvay ) was President of the CEFIC. Since October 2016 it has been Hariolf Kottmann (CEFIC).

politics

REACH is an EU regulation that obliges companies to test their own chemicals for their safety. Cefic has advocated at least relaxing this regulation right up to the end in order to maintain the international competitiveness of the European chemical industry. SQAS is a Europe-wide standard for hazardous substances. Since 1994, within the framework of SQAS, Cefic has developed various procedures to transfer the ISO 9000 ff. Standard to the transport and storage of dangerous goods, etc.
