The Industrieverband Körperpflege- und Waschmittel eV is a German association of manufacturers and distributors of personal care products, detergents, cleaning products and care products based in Frankfurt am Main .

Areas

Due to the breadth of products and the different requirements for the care of the products, the areas of competence beauty care and household care were defined. Beauty care stands for cosmetics and thus in a broader sense for health and well-being. Examples of products in this area are skin cream , sunscreen , hair shampoo , soap , shower gel , aftershave , perfume , make-up , lipstick and toothpaste . The household care stands for activities such as washing, rinsing and cleaning. Representative products are washing powder , fabric softeners , dishwashing detergents , household cleaners, scouring agents , toilet cleaners, glass cleaners, furniture polish , leather care products, carpet cleaners and car care products.

Members

Of the approximately 430 members, around 300 are manufacturers of personal care products (beauty care ) and more than 100 are manufacturers of detergents and cleaning products (household care ). A small number of companies manufacture products in both areas. More than 85 percent of the member companies are small and medium-sized companies. The companies represented by IKW employ a total of more than 40,000 people and their products cover approx. 95 percent of the German market.

The IKW offers its members services on legal, administrative and content-related topics of the product groups represented. At the European level, IKW works closely with the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (AISE) and Cosmetics Europe as well as political bodies. The chairman is Rüdiger Mittendorff.

Dialog cosmetics

The Cosmetics Dialog is a platform for regular, critical dialog that is open to topics and results. Various social groups discuss positions and attitudes on socially significant aspects in the field of cosmetics and personal care . Depending on the topic, 25 to 50 actors from different areas take part: authorities, universities, trade unions, industry, churches, ministries, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), environmental organizations and consumer associations. The institutions and people involved are not specified and the circle is not closed. In addition to the critical dialogue, Dialog Cosmetics develops and imparts practical tips for consumers with the aim of sustainable and health-friendly use of cosmetic products. Well-founded scientific expertise and analyzes of consumer behavior form the basis for this. The result is a contribution made jointly by the dialogue partners to the formation of public opinion.

Forum washing

The Washing Forum is a dialogue platform on sustainability in the areas of washing, washing up and cleaning in the household. With the aim of changing the behavior of consumers and industry in the direction of sustainable consumption and production, the Waschen forum provides contributions to the formation of public opinion and to individual and social behavioral orientation. Experts from authorities, federal ministries, manufacturers of detergents and cleaning agents and household appliances, universities, environmental and consumer associations work on the various topics. Since 2004, the Washing Forum has been organizing the “Sustainable Washing Action Day” every May.

In 2011, 2012 and 2015 the forum received an award from Werkstatt N for its activities. Workshop N is a seal of quality from the Council for Sustainable Development (RNE). The jury of the National Committee of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development has accepted the Washing Forum and the Sustainable Washing Day as an “Official Project of the World Decade” for the period from 2013 to 2014.

haut.de

The IKW is a cooperation partner of the Internet portal www.haut.de, which has been in existence for more than 10 years. The advertising-free and manufacturer-neutral portal provides information on the topics of skin, body care and cosmetics and is financed jointly by all cooperation partners. The topics covered include the structure of skin, hair and teeth, the composition of personal care products, their functions and ingredients. The portal offers a database of ingredients in cosmetic products ( INCI service and INCI app).

Topics such as allergies, intolerances, skin aging, nutrition, anti-aging and sun protection are taken up with current articles and background information on beauty care. An app on the subject of sun protection helps consumers choose the right sun protection product. In addition, topics such as preservatives, microplastics, allergy risks and the safety of cosmetic products are dealt with.

Youth study 2016

On February 17, 2016, the Association of Body Care and Detergents e. V. (IKW) the youth study "Youth without makeup - self-image and self-worth of young people". The market research institute rheingold salon examined the development of self-esteem in adolescents and young adults on behalf of the IKW. A total of 511 girls and 501 boys from several major German cities between the ages of 14 and 21 took part in the, according to their own information, neutral and product-independent survey.
