The Industrieverband Klebstoffe eV (IVK) is a trade association based in Düsseldorf . He is a corporate member of the Verband der Chemischen Industrie (VCI) and is actively involved in European work as a member of the European adhesives association FEICA (Féderation Européenne des Industries de Colles et Adhésifs, English Association of the European Adhesive & Sealant Industry). In addition, there is a close cooperation between the IVK and the German-speaking adhesive industry in Austria and Switzerland.

Association history

After earlier mergers, which are documented up to 1894, twelve adhesive manufacturers founded a joint association in Düsseldorf in 1946, today's Industrieverband Klebstoffe e. V. (then trade association for glues and adhesives ). The first chairman and managing director was Max Schumacher.

In 2018, the German adhesives industry generated total sales of around 4 billion euros with a volume of 955,000 tons of adhesives produced. In Germany, more than 1.5 million tons of adhesives and sealants as well as more than 1 billion square meters of adhesive films and tapes are produced annually.

The industry employs a total of around 13,000 people.

The IVK includes almost 150 manufacturers of adhesives, adhesive tapes and raw materials as well as scientific institutes and system partners. The IVK thus represents more than 90% of the domestic adhesives industry.

Task / goals

The IVK represents the technical and economic interests of its members vis-à-vis the public, authorities, consumers and scientific institutions. In addition, the association dedicates itself to questions and problem solutions around the topic of adhesives on the part of its members and the public. With its own conferences, for example on flooring technology, the IVK supports and promotes communication between its members and the trades as an impetus for the further development of adhesive systems.

In addition to representing industrial interests, the association is also committed to occupational, environmental and consumer protection. Since its foundation, the IVK has launched many future-oriented projects, initiatives and industry solutions. Important milestones were or are, for example, the warning texts for solvent-based adhesives introduced in 1946, adhesive recommendations for the food sector in the early 1960s, and current classification systems such as the Giscode or Emicode .

The Adhesives Industry Association is actively involved in the promotion of young talent: In an interactive e-paper, the IVK provides information on the diverse job profiles of the German adhesives industry in order to make trainees, graduates and students aware of the excellent career opportunities in the industry.

In addition, the IVK, together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Applied Materials Research (IFAM), has developed an adhesive technology personnel qualification program. Over 10,000 people have been trained as adhesive practitioners, adhesive specialists and adhesive engineers in the past 24 years. These qualifications are offered by the Fraunhofer IFAM's advanced training center for adhesive technology in Bremen, TC-Kleben in Übach-Palenberg and other organizations abroad.

Against the background of the digitization strategy of the German federal government, the IVK, together with the Fond der Chemischen Industrie (VCI), digitized its teaching material "The Art of Gluing" and supplemented it with interactive exercises. The various interactive blackboard pictures were specially designed for use in schools on whiteboards, PCs and tablets and are intended to convey the subject of adhesives to schoolchildren using modern learning methods. The material is available to teachers free of charge.

Together with the Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education (FWU) , the IVK has developed didactically prepared teaching material on the subject of "Gluing and Bonding Technology", in which the procedures for a professional bonding process are described.

Association structure & positioning

Association structure

The IVK is a corporate member of the Association of the Chemical Industry (VCI) . Both in terms of content and structure, it is divided into a commercial and a technical area. The specialist committees in these areas are subdivided according to the key markets that are important for the adhesives industry or are based on certain important subject areas.

The IVK is - also in the global competitive environment - the world's largest and, with regard to its broad service portfolio, also the world's leading national association in the field of adhesive technology.

Managing directors

Chairman of the board of the Industrieverband Klebstoffe e. V. has been Boris Taschen since 2010. Ansgar van Halteren acts as a managing board member. The IVK management represents the interests of the adhesives industry in various committees, for example as a full voting member in advisory boards of important trade fairs, in specialist committees of the VCI and the European Chemicals Association (CEFIC), in steering committees of various scientific institutions, in standardization committees or in working bodies of various federal ministries . As a member of the European adhesives association FEICA, the IVK is actively involved in European lobbying.

The management is also integrated into the research landscape; among other things, it accompanies the coordination of publicly funded research projects . This task is taken on by the management as a member of the advisory board of the Adhesive Bonding Technology Section and the Joint Bonding Committee (GAK) under the umbrella of the Society for Chemical Technology and Biotechnology (DECHEMA) e. V. true.

IVK publications

Since 2006, the IVK has been providing information about the enormous range of adhesive technology with the magazine “Gluing for Life”. Innovations that have been "glued" by the German adhesives industry are shown free of any product or company advertising. The magazine appears once a year.

Together with Fraunhofer-IFAM, the IVK has developed the interactive guideline "Gluing - but right" for users of adhesive technology in industry and trade. The planning, development and production of a fictitious product are explained here step by step and all stages of the planning and production phase are systematically taken into account.
