Reinhart Poprawe

Reinhart Poprawe (* 23. January 1954 in Offenbach am Main ) is a German laser - physicist . From 1996 to 2019 he was head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) in Aachen .

Poprawe studied physics at the University of Mainz from 1973 , where he was a working student at Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen from 1975/76 , at the California State University, Fresno in 1976/77 (master's degree in 1977) and from 1978 at the TH Darmstadt (diploma in 1980) . He then worked as a research assistant at the TH Darmstadt, received his doctorate under Gerd Herziger and joined Herziger in 1985 as head of department at the newly founded ILT. From 1989 he was managing director of Thyssen Laser-Technik in Aachen. In 1996 he became professor at RWTH Aachen University and head of the Institute for Laser Technology there. He also headed the ILT from 1996. From 2005 to 2008 he was Vice Rector for Structure, Research and Young Academics at RWTH. He chairs the University's International Board and is the Rector's representative for China.

Among other things, he deals with the development of diode-pumped solid - state lasers and diode lasers and with industrial laser applications (manufacturing and measurement technology).

In 1987 he received the Fraunhofer Prize. In 1987 he co-founded ACLAS Lasertechnik und Maschinenbau GmbH in Aachen. From 2007 to 2009 he was President of the Scientific Society for Laser Technology (WLT) and he is on the board of the Arbeitskreis Lasertechnik eV He is a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), since 2006 a Fellow of the Laser Institute of America (LIA) and a member of North Rhine-Westphalia -Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 2011 he received the innovation award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, in 2014 an honorary professorship from Tsinghua University , Beijing, and the Arthur L. Schawlow Award from the Laser Institute of America (LIA).
