Horst Weber (physicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horst Weber (* 28. March 1935 in Berlin ) is a German physicist and emeritus professors . His specialty is laser physics with a focus on high-performance solid-state lasers and laser resonators.

Weber studied at the TH Berlin , where he received his diploma in 1961. Shortly after the first demonstration of a laser by Theodore Maiman in 1960 , Weber built his own functional gas and solid-state lasers as a doctoral student under Hans Boersch together with Gerd Herziger in laboratory tests at the Physics Institute of the TU Berlin . In addition to the researchers in Dieter Röss's working group at Siemens , he and Herziger were among the first German physicists to begin research in the field of laser physics. With their work at the Physikalisches Institut von Boersch, he and Herziger laid the foundation for what was then a leading laser research group in Germany. After receiving his doctorate in 1965, he was a lecturer at the TH Berlin from 1965. In 1969 he moved with Herziger to the University of Bern , where he was associate professor from 1969 to 1975. From 1975 to 1987 he was a full professor at the University of Kaiserslautern . From 1987 until his retirement in 2003, he was full professor for applied laser physics and head of the institute for solid-state lasers at the TU Berlin. He was the managing director of Laser- und Medizintechnologie Berlin GmbH .

In 1968 he received the Karl Scheel Prize (with Gerd Herziger) for measuring the bandwidth of pulsed lasers.

With Herziger, he wrote a well-known introductory textbook for lasers in 1972.
