Dieter Röß (born April 6, 1932 in Würzburg ) is a German physicist and business manager.

Röß studied physics at the University of Würzburg . In 1959 he was in Würzburg with a thesis on the elementary process of bremsstrahlung doctorate .

From 1960 to 1970 he worked in the research department of Siemens AG in the fields of maser , laser and holography . Röß is considered a laser pioneer in Germany. Immediately after completing his doctorate, he was to develop a ruby burl for the Raisting satellite radio station in the central laboratory of Siemens and Halske in Munich . When the news about Theodore Maiman's ruby laser became known, he built it instead and, when it was running at the end of 1960, had made the first laser work in Germany. Gerd Herziger and Horst Weber from the TH Berlin soon followed, and in 1961 Kurt Lenz in East Berlin . He later became head of the semiconductor works at Siemens AG.

In 1971 Röß completed the Program for Management Development (PMD) at Harvard Business School . In 1991 he was supported by the University of Marburg to honorary professor called and taught in the following years at the universities of Marburg, Giessen , Würzburg and Munich science students in entrepreneurship and in game theory .

In 1978 he became managing director of Vacuumschmelze GmbH, 1979 of Erwin Sick Optoelektronik GmbH (today Sick AG ), 1981 to 1989 of Heraeus Holding GmbH .

Röß is the former chairman of the telecommunications society in the VDE (today the information technology society ). From 1985 to 2012 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation .
