Barbara Baum

Barbara Baum (born May 7, 1944 ) is a German costume designer .

Baum is one of the most renowned costume designers in Germany, who has also worked on numerous international films. She has particular historical films dedicated.

Life

After an apprenticeship as a tailor, Baum completed a degree in art and costume history. She then worked as a fashion designer . Starting in 1967, she made her first experiences in the film business with the directors Peter Fleischmann , Peter Lilienthal and Reinhard Hauff .

In 1972 she met Rainer Werner Fassbinder and was responsible for the costumes in the film Fontane Effi Briest . Until Fassbinder's death in 1982, the two worked together for several films, for example in the works The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979) and Lili Marleen (1981). For the four-part TV series Fathers and Sons by Bernhard Sinkel , Baum also outfitted British actress Julie Christie . Baum was also in demand outside of Germany, so she made the costumes for the international co-productions Homo Faber (1991) and Das Geisterhaus (1993). For the latter, she received the Bavarian Film Prize in 1993 for the best costume design. In 1992 Stanley Kubrick hired her for his planned film Aryan Papers , which, however, was never realized.

At the beginning of the 21st century she worked for the director Heinrich Breloer in the two multi-part documentary dramas The Manns - A Century Novel (2001) and Speer and He (2005) as well as in the film Buddenbrooks , for which she was again awarded the Bavarian TV Prize. For Speer and Er , she was also nominated for the German Television Award in the category Best Equipment in 2005. In September 2010, Barbara Baum was honored with one of the first 40 stars presented at the opening of the Boulevard der Stars in Berlin .

Barbara Baum was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy in 2003 . At the presentation of the German Film Prize on June 19, 2015, she was honored with the honorary award for outstanding services to German film and was made an honorary member of the German Film Academy .
