Tango-Traum is a documentary film by the DEFA Studio for Documentaries by Helke Misselwitz from 1985 .

action

A woman sits at her typewriter and thinks, she smokes and listens to music, tango of course. A look out of the window over the wide sea with a view of a ship passing in the distance reminds you that Argentina is far away. And yet her thoughts go on a journey to the other end of the world, to that time far back at the turn of the century when tango was born. So how did it come about? The director questions books and old films and even an Argentine whose puzzling answer is: "Tango, this is something between man and woman ... a tango happens or it doesn't happen and even if it doesn't happen, it's a tango".

In order to find out what a tango actually is, the woman repeatedly plays tango music on the record player. She looks for a dress in her closet that goes with the music and thinks about how it began. At the beginning of the 20th century, workers and soldiers in Buenos Aires met the prostitutes in the evening. Here they improvised a dance that resembled the Cuban habanera , competing for the women with elaborate step creations, so that it became a game with sensual excitement. While the woman slips on a pair of nylon stockings and puts on earrings, the camera pans from her reflection in the mirror, over her legs, which are moving in tango dance steps, to many photographs lying on the floor, and then her gaze falls on a tray with a candlestick and an overturned red wine glass.

Another look out of the window shows a passing subway at night. The woman realizes that she will never get the full feel for the tango, because that can only arise in the atmosphere on the Rio de la Plata . She removes all photos from the floor, because for her the tango will always be just a dream.
