DataCite is an international consortium that has set itself the goal of providing easy access to scientific research data, increasing the acceptance of research data as legitimate and citable contributions to scientific research and supporting the archiving of research data in order to ensure transparency and sustainable use for to ensure the research.

history

DataCite was founded in London in December 2009 as a registered association of institutions from six countries.

Founding members include the British Library (BL), the Technical Information Center of Denmark (DTIC), the TU Delft library (Netherlands), the National Research Council's Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI) , and California Digital Library , Purdue University (USA) and the Technical Information Library (TIB). The office is run by the TIB Hannover .

The concept has met with great international interest. Just one year after it was founded, DataCite had already registered 1,002,631 data sets, had 15 well-known research libraries and technical information centers from 10 countries among its members and worked with over 50 data centers from all over the world, which permanently store the registered data.

DataCite has also been operating re3data, a cross-disciplinary, international directory of research data repositories for several years . The service originally emerged from a DFG- funded project and the association with a comparable US offer, Databib.

aims

DataCite promotes data sharing, access to research data, and improved protection of research investments. As a global consortium, DataCite unites individual regional (national) members who can offer the scientist direct service. The cooperation promotes the worldwide researching scientist and creates global access to scientific research data.

technology

In order to enable easy access to research data, these are assigned digital object identifiers (DOI) by the members . Registration takes place in cooperation with data centers, which are responsible for quality assurance, maintenance and storage of the content. As the umbrella association of the affiliated DOI registries, DataCite is a member of the International DOI Foundation (IDF).
