The registration agency for social and economic data da | ra aims to make research data permanently identifiable and available in order to increase the acceptance of research data as legitimate and citable contributions to scientific research and to support the archiving of research data. da | ra is operated by the GESIS Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences and the German Central Library for Economic Sciences ZBW .

task

In the sense of Good Scientific Practice, the requirement is to make primary data publicly available so that not only the final research results are available, but also the entire research process can be traced. By means of digital object identifiers , research data about da | ra are made permanently identifiable and citable.

Registration

da | ra assigns DOI names for research data and other digital objects that have been created in the context of the social and economic research process. While the registered objects remain with the local data centers or data providers, the associated metadata is made researchable in an information system.

The DOI is a permanent, persistent identifier that is used to cite and indirectly link objects. The DOI is permanently linked to the object as an entity and allows the object to be referenced even if the storage location changes. Current and structured metadata are assigned to an object via the DOI. The DOI reference is therefore linked to the delivery of a defined set of metadata per object.

da | ra obtains the DOIs through membership in DataCite . DataCite is accredited by the International DOI Foundation as an official DOI Registration Agency.

List of da | ra publication agents

Organizational units from the social and economic research area are authorized to register for DOI. The digital objects can be research data at study level, aggregate data, microdata or data from qualitative research.

Data verification system

As part of the da | ra registration agency, GESIS has been building a comprehensive record system for data from empirical social research since the end of 2011. In this data record system, data that are not registered via da | ra, but are nevertheless relevant for social science research, are described, including information on the data source and access options. The aim is to provide centralized evidence for the desk research of widely distributed databases that are collected by different institutions and often also made available for re-use. The data records can be researched using the da | ra metadata search.
