The Institute for Technology and Education ( ITB ) is a central scientific institution (ZWE) of the University of Bremen with a focus on vocational training research. The main idea behind the research is the design of work, technology and education.

With around 50 employees, the ITB is one of the largest university vocational training research institutions in the world. The institute was founded in 1986 by Professors Heinz Erbe (professional specialization in metal technology / production processes), Detlev Gronwald (professional specialization in electrical engineering / production IT), Manfred Hoppe (professional specialization in metal technology / professional education) and Felix Rauner (professional specialization in electrical engineering / professional education).

The ITB is organized in departments. These are:

  • Work-oriented educational processes, head of department: Falk Howe
  • Professional specialization in metal technology, head of department: Maren Petersen
  • Work- and job-oriented transitions, educational processes and diversity, head of department: Marc Thielen
  • Learning, teaching and organization, head of department: Michael Gessler

The ITB is run by a board of directors consisting of three professors. The institute's spokesperson is elected from among them. Speakers for the ITB were: 1986–1987: Felix Rauner, 1987–1988: Manfred Hoppe, 1988–1989: Felix Rauner, 1990: Detlef Gronwald, 1990–1994: Manfred Hoppe, 1994–1998: Detlev Gronwald, 1998–2005: Felix Rauner, 2005–2011: Georg Spöttl, 2011–2015: Michael Gessler, since 2015: Falk Howe.

The Institute Council makes fundamental decisions. In particular, it is responsible for the budget, decisions on the research program, research perspectives and research profile, and for the development and updating of a program to promote young scientists.

The main focus of the work is applied vocational training research, the scientific support of reform projects and programs in vocational training as well as the development of expertise and the like. a. on behalf of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission, the European Center for the Promotion of Vocational Training ( Cedefop ), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and other ministries as well as the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB).
