Between 1995 and 2000 Dion Åkerstrøm was one of the best Danish track cyclists in the short-term disciplines. In 1998 he was Danish champion in the Keirin and in 2000 in the sprint , he was on the podium numerous more times, also in the team sprint and in the 1000-meter time trial . After an eight-year hiatus, he finished third again in the Danish sprint championship in 2008.
Åkerstrøm works as a trainer. His protégés include the two-time junior world champion Mie Bekker Lacota and the Danish sprint champion from 2011, Bernhard Franzpötter .
The Danish championship in sprint for professionals was not held continuously. From 1994, after the separation of amateurs and professionals, the riders belong to the elite.
