Valerio Piva

Valerio Piva (born July 5, 1958 in Ceresara , Italy) is a former Italian cyclist and later sports director .

In 1977 he won a national championship title when he and his team won the Italian championship in team pursuit. He finished the International Peace Ride in 1980 in 28th place (with a stage win). Piva turned professional at Bianchi-Piaggio in 1982 . During his active career, he competed five times in the Giro d'Italia and once in the Tour de France , before retiring at the end of the 1991 season.

After his racing career, Piva first made a name for himself as the sporting director of smaller cycling teams . In 2002 he became the sporting director of the Italian team Mapei and from 2005 of the ProTeam T-Mobile, the later HTC-Highroad . This was followed by engagements with the Katusha team and the BMC Racing Team .

Valerio Piva is the son-in-law of former Belgian professional cyclist Yvo Molenaers .
